Hello Jens,
How many years are you fishing for barbel?
I've started in 2004 with my barbel fishery. But it took some months to catch my first barbel.
How many barbel did you catch so far?
I don't write down every barbel so I must guess. But I know an English barbel fisher that catches 200-300 per year. Maybe that`s the number that comes near to my all time result ;).
For me it`s not the number that`s important, but the weight. Sometimes you must catch a lot of fish before landing a big one. In England they call it the “number game”.
What is the biggest barbel you catch and the date of that catch?
It was a barbel with a length of 73cm and 5,1kg. Interesting was it`s figure, it looked more like a carp than a barbel. Caught in end of April 2005

What was the most barbel you catch in one session and in how many hours?
19 barbel's in 5h. Several days in October you can catch that lot of barbel. But I must admit that its very stressing and only ok for a few days a year. Otherwise it becomes too boring to always catch barbel.
Your favorite river?
Its the river Rhine.
What is your favorite hook bait and groundbait?
The Maggot and a common river-mix with vanilla enhancer. I`ll try to fish more with pellet’s and boilies, but the maggots are always (without pre-baiting) a barbelkiller ;).
What is your barbel technique?
2 Rods often fished in different range, Feederstyle as you do. But sometimes additive baiting with hand too.
What is the rod you use?
Browning Feeder XXL 4,2m Rod with WG180g. Sounds like a very heavy rod, but it isn`t.
The best barbel month?
Definitely October. Second place: April.
The best hours to catch barbel?
I´ll prefer the time from 11am-3pm.
What is your greatest memory/ story in barbel fishing?
I have one favorite story because we (the barbenfischen.de-crew) had so many very funny session`s, I couldn't count. But one of the greatest sessions was the trip to the nuclear power plant Biblis.
Tips and tricks from Jens:
1th: Don`t think too much about the best bait and if your tackle is outstanding. Nothing is more important than fish as long as you can. The more hours your bait is in the water, the more your chances are to catch barbel. I`m sure sooner or later you will get success and catch a lot of barbel or the big one you ever dreamed of.
2th: Learn from your mistakes. If your hook length break several times, try another line. Your target must be to catch almost every barbel that takes your bait.
3th: You can only catch big barbel, when you have a population of the target size. Investigate your river but don`t trust every fishermen! Set your own knowledge.
4th: When you fish with maggots: If you put on the bait on the hook and it don`t feel easy to penetrate the maggot, it`s very important to replace the hook. Only the sharp hook gets you the best result.
What is your favorite fishing spot?
Only on straight flows. We have a lot of this type, but just a few with a good barbel population. I think the ground and the environment is the point for barbel's, choosing their favorite places.
Is barbel fishing popular in Germany?
It´s not very popular in our country, but in some years it will be. That depends on the barbel-population, that grows every year.
Is it possible for a dutchmen to visit Germany for Barbel fishing or is it only possible if you have a special fishing license?
Normally it’s not a problem to get a card for the River Rhine. You only need a valid fisher-license.
Jens, Thank you for your time, and good luck with Barbel fishing and your site Barbenfischen.de.
