Evening falls and I mount the electronic bite indicators because it is too dark to see my rod tips. Suddenly an indicator tells me that I have a bite and I grab my rod. A short but exciting play follows and inside a couple of minutes my first Barbel of the season is lying on my dehooking mat. Not a particularly big one, I guess somewhere between 50 and 55cms, but in the winter period any Barbel takes the first prize.
What a fantastic weekend all in all. Seeing your favourite metal band live and being treated to your first Barbel of the season.
This weekend includes our second favourite hobby, Norwegian Black Metal.
One of our favourite Norwegian metal bands is Kampfar and they are making an appearance in our own home town of Zwolle. Wendy and I try as often as possible, a couple of times a year at least, to visit Norway for a concert or a fishing holiday on the fjords or higher in the mountains trying for the wild trout.
Friday the 13th February.
Iskald opens the concert as warmer up. On this tour Kampfar and Vreid take it in turns as main act. Today kampfar has second place and this is the band that we really came to see and hear.
As soon as they take the stage and the first loud guitar sounds roll out of the speakers, I get goose pimples all down my spine, what a great band! My thoughts go immediately back to Norway standing on a mountain top and enjoying the scenery.
The band has a real aura and live they are really super. After the concert we speak to a couple of the band members including Jon the base guitarist and Dolk the vocalist. The conversation varies from the metal scene in Norway to fishing on the Glomma river where Jon throws out a hook now and then, Dolk prefers sea fishing trying for cod or anything that is around. I made them an offer of a session on the Yssel to try for some Barbel, who knows what will happen......
The evening was for me absolutely undiscribable, I can only say, AWESOME!
Sunday morning I look out the window and it is raining with here and there a bit of snow inbetween and the temperature a lousy 2 degrees c.
After a super musical weekend something tells me to go down to the Yssel and give it a try. A heavy wind is shaking my rod tips and it is cold and wet. My thoughts keep drifting off to the concert of the Norwegian black metal gods,Kampfar. This compromises the cold and wet a bit.
Saturday ”the day after”.
Barbel are a difficult fish to catch in the winter period and I have not yet heard of a barbell catch so far this year. None the less I have decided to try my luck today after a long absence on the Yssel. I fished from 13-00 to 16-30pm but unfortunately not even a bite from a barbel.
Time to pack up and head for home, a Kampfar cd in the cd player, and the volume full.
Kampfar thanks for a great weekend and in april we will see you at Inferno Festival in Oslo!
